i was just reading a novel and one of the characters drank an alcoholic beverage i've never heard of. Granted, since I've been out of that scene for many years, this probably isn't that surprising. During my misspent youth I was a semi pro bar tender but I have never heard of this one. Would someone please tell me what is in a dirty martini. Yes, I know, I know, google would probably give me this information. You guys are just so much more interesting. Thanks.

I only know what's in a regular one and I don't know if I want to try the dirty one.
Used tampons?
Some cultures might do that...who knows. That's what comes to mind.

I might be very wrong, and should probably go Google it too, but I think the "dirty" refers to olives in the martini.
If the martini is oliveless it is not dirty. This is just something I feel I heard somewhere so I may very easily be wrong.
I'll eventually break down, Google this and come back with an answer. *grin*

I don't drink alcoholic stuff but I'll gladly take some good olives, feta with Greek oregano and kalamata olive oil ontop, some warm pita, and a nice plate of fasolada... lol I haven't eaten yet. Must fix that.

Hmm never did much with the mixed rinks; just give me a few straight shots and a lager for a beer back ...
Though I will say a martini is usually ok on account of it's not all fruity or sweet or anything. That or a bloody Mary.
Hmm a bloody Mary with a side of green olives ... and maybe some smoked salmon?

You only add a little olive juice not lots. The olives use are dry, but if you add a bit of the juice well.

I found a recipe for the drink, and for convenience's sake, I'll paste it here. Now, I don't know how to write HTML code, but the website you can paste into your browser which I've found to be a wonderful resource for drinks is
http://www.drinkstreet.com
and here's the recipe for the drink as presented there.

Dirty Martini

     2 1/2 ounces Gin
     3/4 ounce Dry Vermouth
     1/2 tablespoon Olive Brine
Put all ingredients in a shaker with one cup of cracked ice and shake about 20 seconds and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with three olives.
